1745_10151606598912502_1394376394_nDemocracy for America, CREDO, SEIU Healthcare Illinois, and Black Lives Matter Chicago are just some of the groups that have called on Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez to resign in the wake of numerous failures to clean up the police department, culminating in what the New York Times called a “cover-up” of the killing of Laquan McDonald.

Just this week, NBC News reported that senior aides to Rahm Emanuel knew about the damning video showing that a young black man, Laquan McDonald, posed no threat to the officer that killed him with 16 gunshots. Yet Rahm Emanuel opposed releasing the video, possibly to prevent it from derailing his bid to win a second term in office.

RahmRahm Emanuel continues to deny he knew about or covered up the video, but few observers believe him any more. The media as well as leaders such as Van Jones are asking the same question of Rahm Emanuel that reporters asked about President Nixon during the Watergate scandal: “what did he know and when did he know it?

Meanwhile, more evidence has emerged that State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez has protected cops who break the law. Salon reported yesterday that she refused to prosecute a Chicago police officer who admitted she lied and committed perjury on the stand during a criminal trial.

Anita AlvarezDespite all this, Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez are convinced they can hold on and keep their jobs. Rahm Emanuel even bragged to reporters from Politico that since he won the election earlier this year, there’s nothing anyone can do to force him to resign.

It’s time to change that. Click here to call Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez: tell them to resign immediately so that Chicago can begin to address injustice.

chicago-illinois3Rahm Emanuel’s time as mayor of Chicago has been a disaster. Under his leadership, Chicago’s problems have only grown worse.
The final straw for many Chicago residents was the way Rahm Emanuel, State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy circled the wagons around a broken police department after Laquan McDonald was killed by a police officer.

chicago-illinois7Whether it was because Rahm Emanuel didn’t want to jeopardize his re-election bid, or because he, Alvarez, and McCarthy weren’t interested in holding officers accountable, they worked together to hold back the cause of justice. Only when a judge ordered the video be made public did Alvarez charge the officer with murder.

chicago-illinois6Almost every day, the people of Chicago have been taking to the streets to demand justice: starting with the resignation of Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez, and leading to strong, lasting reforms to the police department to ensure these injustices never happen again. The nation is outraged at this scandalous lack of justice and lack of respect for black lives. It’s time for change. It’s time for new leadership in Chicago.

chicago-illinois1It’s time for Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez to go.

Your voice matters. A flood of calls will get the attention of Rahm Emanuel and Anita Alvarez. Call today and urge them to resign — and show that there is still justice in America.

Thank you for stepping up in this crucial moment.
