Teaching children to spell by breaking words into syllables is a methodology that was used in elementary schools in the 50’s. Back then, children learned to sound words out and spell them by breaking them into syllables. Example: ex-am-ple is a 3-syllable word (How Many Syllables, n.d. Web. 31 March 2017). When a word is sounded out, the child hears the correct pro-nun-ci-a-tion of the word and can identify it by the number of syllables they hear. Syllables are vowels (A, E, I, O, U), the letter Y is only a vowel when it sounds like the vowel I (fry, cry, sky, fly, etc.) (Spellzone Limited, 2016).
I will begin working with my great grandchildren to teach them how to spell using syllables. I want them to learn how valuable sounding words out and breaking them into syllables can help them to pronounce and memorize words correctly. This will also be helpful to them when they use words to communicate in a conversation and when they are learning to write.
