I presented Craig K. Wimberly, Coalition of African American Leaders (COAL)’s President, with the Nonprofit Utopia Community Anchor Award. This award is given to nonprofit leaders who demonstrate impact in their local communities, the Nonprofit Utopia Community, as well as a commitment to organizational capacity building. I emphasized Wimberly’s role in advocacy for the creation of the Chicago Board of Education Black Student Achievement Committee.
Wimberly enlisted COAL’s support in partnering with IAAFER, Chicago Westside NAACP, BUFI and other community organizations to develop comprehensive legislation to create an evidence-based strategic management process designed to close the achievement and opportunity gaps among Black children in Chicago Public Schools. For the first time in history, there is a law mandating Chicago Board of Education-level accountability for results. This means that, regardless of changes in administration or elected leadership, the Board of Education, and CPS by extension, are responsible for ensuring that our children get the supports they need to succeed.
We thank every elected official, member of the Chicago Board of Education and Chicago Public Schools team, and all community members and stakeholders for your role in bringing this legislation and committee to fruition. Our children deserve our attention.
