TINLEY PARK, IL — A Tinley Park police officer was injured while attempting to apprehend vehicle burglary suspects on Oct. 17, according to police. Police said the incident occurred at Panera Bread, 7204 W. 191st St.

Police said a caller reported seeing a man get out of a white Dodge Durango with Texas plates, then entered an unlocked BMW. According to the caller, the man dug through the car and then returned to the Durango, which then drove away. Moments later, the caller said they located the owner of the BMW, who confirmed that items were missing from the car.

According to police, when the officer got there, the caller had found the Durango parked and unoccupied in the fire lane at Best Buy. Police said the officer walked to the car and two men exited the store, immediately getting into the Durango.

Police said the officer attempted to stop the men by opening the driver’s side door and reaching in to grab the driver. According to police, the Durango sped away — with the officer hanging out of it — from the scene, disobeying a stop sign. Police said the car lost control and crashed head-on into a tree. The men were able to flee from the vehicle and escape, according to police.

Police said the officer sustained several injuries and was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for treatment.
